My main problem with Matisse is not with Matisse per se, it is with the worship of Matisse. It puts other first rate artists of his era in the shadows. Derain and Braque immediately come to mind. Not that they're neglected, they're just relegated to planetary status around the double sun of Matisse-Picasso. And the fate of non-French or non-School of Paris twentieth century artists is even worse. Here are some German modernists - Lovis Corinth, Carl Hofer, Otto Dix and Max Beckmann - each one a marvel in his own right, but all, with the possible exception of Beckmann, relegated to marginal status in the official version of modern art. Hope this doesn't sound like name dropping. I'm just not all that bowled over by Matisse and wish other first rate and interesting artists were at least as appreciated.

Not at all, I appreciate the names!

I think I just like women in blue, for some reason.
